This is Gabriel Byrne’s life, and it’s a fascinating journey. The Hollywood and Broadway superstar has appeared in 80 or more films. He is widely loved and respected for his work. But life didn’t start that way. Byrne was brought up in a working class home outside Dublin in Eire, a child who took great solace from the natural beauty of the region’s fields and hills. Four years spent training for the priesthood in an English seminary ended in disgrace, with the young Byrne expelled and sent back home. A series of dead-end jobs and an increasing obsession with films eventually saw him join an amateur dramatics group, as suggested by a friend, and that’s when the magic began.
Byrne’s best-selling book of the same name tells the story so far, dealing with his life story in a wonderfully lyrical way. Problems handling fame and fortune led to addiction, making the story so much more than ordinary. The performance itself is pure heaven. And the show is led by a superb creative team: along with Gabriel Byrne, the writer and performer, Lonny Price directs. The Sound Designer and Composer is Sinead Diskin, the Set and Lighting Designer is Sinead McKenna, the Costume Designer is Joan O’Clery, and the Associate Director is Matt Cowart. Your venue is the West End’s magnificent Apollo Theatre. This is sheer class. Don’t miss out on Walking With Ghosts tickets.
